Update: 0.8.3b
First of all, thank you Mr. Tag, for your early bug report and immediate workaround post in the comments for the 0.8.3 release. Building software for this community is made even better by the high caliber of email and blog comments. I love writing code anyway, but delivering the code to cool people is a super bonus. It was one of the reasons that I chose to work on the Mac platform in the first place.
I even enjoy tracking down nasty bugs as long as they show up before a public release. Tracking down a bug after a public release moves it from the “fun” column over into the “scary” column. Unfortunately, this time one got out into the wild. No data was harmed. Users of previous betas upgraded without issues as far as I can tell from all of the feedback. However, some new users were greeted with a not-so-hot disappearing app trick. Version 0.8.3b fixes the issue.
If your app did not launch properly, please download this new version. If you did not have any problems, then there is no need to grab the new version as there is no new functionality outside of that fix. This update has been tested on all current models, plus the older G4 models in all sorts of upgrade/overlap scenarios.

Nice work and you’re welcome Jon! At the moment though I am feeling more comfortable in kGTD since I can do sub-projects there and I am sort of used to the kGTD workflow.
However Actiontastic is MUCH better than Midnight Inbox which I found too restrictive and impossible to understand. Keep up the good work!

I didn’t immediately spy a better place to ask questions. I am not a GTD expert (although I read most of the book a few years back) so maybe I just don’t understand how I am supposed to work. To whit:
I created a project in which I have two actions (in the same context). Naively I would expect, when I visit the context, to only see the first action in the list (the next action) but I see both actions.
Perhaps this is better (I’m not sure, but it would seem less cluttered if I only saw the next thing to do for that project) because I have an overview? Perhaps it is simpler? Perhaps I’ve missed some way of setting task dependency and the list ordering doesn’t correspond to an implicit dependency among tasks?
Any pointers would be appreciated. Especially to a forum or other place to discuss Actiontastic.
Thanks. Matt.

While you are in the Context view, you can either see all tasks or, by clicking the “Next Action” filter above the list, view only the next action for each project in that context.

Is there going to be support for printing? Being able to print lists by context and project would be a welcome change. Also, being able to print next action lists would be amazing.
Another idea that I had would be to include weekly review support. I envision this working in a similar fashion to the inbox processing feature. You hit the review button and every open task and project comes up in sequence. From there you have the ability yo mark tasks and projects as completed, switch contexts and the like.
Still, your software is a great implementation of GTD, and I love the Quicksilver plug-in.

@eatmytag. I use a prefix to get sub projects. Project1-subthing1, Project1-subthing2

Just getting ready to take Actiontastic for a spin. I’d be interested to see an extensive set of screenshots from the various sections to use as a set-up template. If you can share some shots with flying-car projects and related actions, I’d appreciate it.
One other suggestion: Please take a look at Easy Task Manager’s approach to the GTD calendar. It allows a view of “today” and “next seven days” that acts as a subset of 42 folders. They have a number of screenshots up for it at www.orionbelt.com.
Thanks for what looks like a simple, clean app,

Jon, I wanted to thank you for making actiontastic such a great implementation of GTD.
After reading the book (3 times) and trying out *every other GTD app/implementation (both Mac and Web based) I can honetly say you have got it right. I also want to persuade you to keep actiontastic that way.
What is the Weekly Review?
Very simply, the Weekly Review is whatever you need to do to get your head empty again. It’s going through the five phases of workflow management–collecting, processing, organizing, and reviewing all your outstanding involvements–until you can honestly say, “I absolutely know right now everything I’m not doing but could be doing if I decided to.”
–from David Allen’s Getting Things Done
So, I do have to agree with Anders Betnér above. Please do not include a “Weekly Review” function. It is simply not necessary.
These are things that apps like the “bloated” Midnight Inbox get wrong. We have to keep in mind that GTD, in its simplest form, can be managed, very effecively, with paper and pen.

I’m going to chime in on this release. I still would like to see more keyboard shortcuts to move around without having to use the tab key so heavily. I also think that the new “Process Inbox” is not needed. I think it starts actiontastic down the path of adding unnecessary features. What makes this tool so cool to me is its incredible focus and simplicity. Midnight Inbox although really looking cool is insanely confusing and not coincidentally is loaded with this sort of wizard bloat.
My 2 cents…

@steve
The inbox was a pain to process before the “Process inbox” appeared. Without it you can make an item in the inbox an action, but then you would have to go to projects to give the action a context and if it belongs to a project you have to drag it to that project. The new “Process inbox” does all that in one swift elegant sweep. (This is just my opinion, so feel free to disregard it.)

Yeah I have reconsidered and I basically agree. Some form of weekly review with parameters per project or context would also be cool. I would just hate to see the tool get overly fancy. Being able to get in and out quickly is a big reason I use Actiontastic.

It doesn’t have to get overly fancy to support weekly reviews. The Project view is almost there

Greetings.
The “pause” and “start date” features don’t seem to be working for me in v0.8.3b. What I mean is that actions show up in the context view even when the action is paused, or has a start date in the future, or the action’s project is paused, or has a start date in the future. This is true no matter what mode I have the actions, projects, and contexts lists (All, Current, ToDo, Next Action, etc.).
I had been under the impression that this feature was in fact implemented. Am I wrong, or just confused?

I like the app a lot - first time trying one of these GTD type things - just trying to make sense of a lot of to-dos for various consulting clients - usually quick one offs, but being able to track by client is fantastic.
Which leads me to the issue: I have about 20 clients with tasks - and running through the F3 process is pretty quick, until i have to scroll down through the 20 projects to find the right one. Any shortcuts or planned shortcuts for picking one more quickly?
I noticed I can tab through the entry pages, and use arrow keys, but trying to think of a way to move even faster.
But so far, you have another buyer.

@Everyone:
Good points have been made about the Weekly Review. At this point, I think the best thing will be to just keep it flexible and avoid any sort of wizard or “process” for something that is fairly custom for each person.
To those mentioning the incomplete pause and start date functionality are correct. An attempt was made to bring this up in the “Things that could be better” section of the 0.8.3 announcement, but I should have made it more clear. Right now, pausing a project hides it from the project list on the left. Pausing a context does the same. A full tie in with the action views should be ready for the next release. It just didn’t make the safe cut off time to get it out there before the previous beta expired.

Yes, more shortcut and tab refinements will be available in a future release.

This is truly one of the better Mac implementations of David Allen’s GTD that I have ever touched upon.
I was using kGTD successfully (mostly) for a couple months before I finally saw this on Merlin’s 43folders blog. I really like the slick and simple surface that really emphasizes David’s idea of just a simple “list maker.” (Unlike the beautiful but terribly bloated Midnight Inbox)
However, what really provoked me to switch was the iPod syncing. It’s great! I love the simplicity, and I carry my iPod everywhere– my new “hipster Pod” plus “hipster PDA” combination really does it for me.
I also like the idea of iCal integration and printing options.
So far, this latest version has been pretty stable and helpful.

Whenever Actiontastic syncs with my iPod, it creates for each text file a corresponding 3 digit number in front and the actual “to do” afterwards. I’m assuming this is a clever way to prevent the iPod from just organizing the lists in alphabetical order.
However, whenever there are 10 or more context list items, the 10th list item always leaves out the 1st zero and only appears as “10″ instead of “010″ as the other text files seem to indicate it should.
Thus, the list item is out of order in my iPod. I hope I’m not the only one who has this problem?
Also, I’d like to suggest that command-I be used as the shortcut for the information sidebar. I love shortcuts! :D

- Write down a note anywhere. Immediately save and close Actiontastic. Reopen the program. The note just disappeared.
- Write down a note anywhere. First jump to another action/project/context and then close Actiontastic. Reopen the program. Your note is still there.
I wonder if somebody else can reproduce this behavior.

Finally thought of an feature item… Because I was needing it today. Anybody suggested that Actions have a hierarchy? As my project actions are often made up of smaller items, that I’d like to track with one larger global rollup item, it would be very handy to have an OO-type parent-child relationship. Probably really difficult to do - I’m just using spaces and numbering to do it, but that’s a manual kludge.
An example is: I have a first revision of wireframes to complete for a client. It consists of three sections. I’d like to deal with each section as a separate action… Does that make sense?
And keep up the good work - I’m pretty pleased with how this app fits into my previously GTD-less workflow…

Speaking of save, it seems to me that the database should automatically be committed on every change if it doesn’t already - this might make an explicit save action unnecessary. I keep actiontastic running for long periods of time, I’d feel better if I didn’t have to think about saving in case of a crash.
