Actiontastic Beta 2
The latest Actiontastic beta is ready for testing:
Download Actiontastic 0.8.1Update: Get the latest version here
(Mac OS X Tiger Required)
This release includes minor updates to help stay in the zone based on feedback from the last release. Fellow mouse-haters will be pleased. If you were using an earlier version, simply replace it with the new one and your data will be preserved.
Detailed notes from the change log:
- All Actions in the *Single Actions category are considered Next Actions by the filter button in the Context view
- Cmd+N adds a new Action to a Project or Context
- Cmd 1, 2, and 3 switch between the Inbox, Project, and Context views
- Space bar marks selected Actions as complete/incomplete
- Backspace/Delete now removes Actions and Inbox Items
- Confirmations for Action removal have been removed (Undo takes care of this)
- Tooltips added
- Application icon refined
- Minor interface tweaks
- Extended test period
Features in the oven that didn’t make the cut for this beta include:
- A “Send to Actiontastic” Quicksilver trigger
- A drawer for notes
- Automatic Software Updates
- and of course, web syncing!

I like it. On the shortcut thing, I would be able to hit return with an item/project/context selected to edit it. I should also be able to hit backspace to delete contexts and projects. Maybe an extra level of warning if the context or project is not empty.

hmm. When I create a new action, the new item no longer gets focus. Is that intentional?

@Joel: Thanks!
@Steve: Good point. I’ll see about keeping the existing warnings for Project and Context removal, but skip them for empty ones.
@Robb: That sounds odd. I’ll email for details.

Good job on implementing the shortcuts for us keyboard junkies. I have but one humble suggestion: When creating a new action (Cmd-N), make it so that the TAB key switches between the action and the context column for quick and easy contextualization.
And I welcome Steve’s “enter to edit” suggestion. It’s UI consistent (like it is in Finder, for instance).

+1 Steve
? Robb… I can’t replicate it.
Now for two feature requests:
1. alphabetize column by clicking on the column heading
2. clicking the close window button should just close the window and not quit the app :)

Jon,
Nice features. In the inbox, it still does not start a ew task after you have entered one, which means you have to keep clicking on a new button to enter a new task which really slows down the process.
I’m excited to hear about the web version.

Matt, I find pressing Shift+Cmd+I quite convenient already.

@All: Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Some of these ideas are planned for the near term and the others are now on the brainstorming list.

It’s very nice to see a GTD app that is super-simple. Most of the ones out there are horribly bogged-down in due-dates, etc.
Co-incidently I started coding an app that is had almost exactly the same functionality as yours. It was even going to have ‘tastic’ in the name (I wrote a crappy quiz program called Buzztastic and a lesson-planner called Plantastic.) The basics worked and I intended to pretty it up and stick it on MacUpdate, but never got round to it. In the meantime you rocket in with an app that works perfectly, looks great and as a result you’ll be worshipped by Mac users everywhere - DAMN YOU!!! ;-)

Just wanted to drop you a note, that I also really appreciate your simple approach. Two thumbs up. As for future versions: I’d like to see some sort of sync functionality, so that my list of tasks is always up-to-date on my Macs :)

Hi,
Trying to contact you, but there’s no contact link anywhere on your site, and Google can’t tell me your email address either.
Is this intentional? :)

@Steve: Sorry…this was not intentional :-)
@Wolfgang: Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the link on your site! I hope you will be pleased with the web sync functionality that is in development. More news will be posted on this blog as it becomes available.
@Alexander: This was not intentional and has been remedied by adding my email address to the About page. To save a click, you can just email my first name at this domain dot com.

hi,
Nice little program. I think I’m going to like it very much. However, there is one thing I’d like to see: hierarchical projects, that is, projects in projects.
And I think, I might have found two small bugs:
(1) if I add an action, enter some text and hit + for entering another action (without removing the focus from the just entered action first), the text gets replaced by ‘New Action’
(2) it seems to be impossible to change the text of actions in Contexts (does work in Projects).
Two thumbs up :)

A perfect example of why not to procrastinate. ;)
